On Monday, June 11, 2012, Attorney General Eric Holder spoke to the League of Women Voters 50th National Convention in Washington, DC about the challenges to voting rights, protecting all voters and strengthening America's elections systems.

Two interviews on terrorism were conducted by Xandra Kayden (member of the LWVUS Board from 2001 to 2008) with Brian Michael Jenkins in Los Angeles in August of 2008.  They are part of the “Strategies for a Secure World” program that encouraged Leagues to educate themselves and their communities about why we are under attack, how terrorism has changed, and to begin thinking about what kinds of policies will be required to defeat terrorism in the long-run.

The documentary "Un-Natural State" looks at the denial of democracy in our nation’s capital and how DC citizens are directly affected by this injustice. The video won the prize for Best Editing in the 2006 International Documentary Challenge, and debuted on Thursday, August 31, 2006, at AFI in Silver Spring, MD. The League’s commitment to increase citizen understanding of the importance of our nation’s system of separation of powers and checks and balances provided for in the U.S. Constitution was highlighted during its recent 2006 Biennial Convention. A panel of distinguished jurists and academics addressed the full convention on the topic of MERIT SELECTION? ELECTIONS? APPOINTMENTS? UNDERSTANDING THE SYSTEM TO DEFEND THE COURTS.

The third part of the Educational Forum Series, The Changing Faces of Power: Women in Politics, was held on March 25, 2008 at the Sewall-Belmont House & Museum in Washington DC. The series of events was hosted by the League of Women Voters and Sewall-Belmont House & Museum.

Speaker Biographies

Lee H. Hamilton
Lee H. Hamilton is president and director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and director of The Center on Congress at Indiana University.  Hamilton served for 34 years in Congress representing Indiana's ninth district, from January 1965 - to January 1999.

After a sixteen year period in which there were no public presidential debates, the League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF) sponsored three presidential debates in 1976.

The Honorable John Kitzhaber, Governor of Oregon, 1994-2002 addressed convention delegates and attendess on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at the start of the afternoon plenary session.

During the post World War II period, the League helped lead the effort to establish the United Nations and to ensure U.S. participation.
